Mr. Cato first started Tae Kwon Do in 1982 when he was 11-years old. His close friend Marcus Johnson, another Charles Minter alumnus, was a green belt at the time and talked him into giving it a try. Mr. Cato immediately fell in love with martial arts --mostly at first because of the cool uniform, but soon because he experienced the satisfaction of seeing training and effort pay off in improved ability. He first became an assistant instructor under Mr. Minter in 1986 at the age of 15 and remained an assistant instructor throughout his high school years and off and on during college. Becoming an instructor was what helped Mr. Cato improve his own skills the most, since the constant, thoughtful repetition of movements required when teaching a student has the effect of improving and refining the teacher's own abilities. Mr. Cato has learned over the years that, while experience may be the best teacher, teaching often makes for the best experience. He has participated in numerous competitions over the years, winning everything from first place to "nice try." Mr. Cato began his training anew in 2005 after having been away from the martial arts for a while. He is currently enjoying the challenge of getting himself back into shape and is grateful to have the martial arts back in his life. He currently helps out with teaching at the main Snellville location where he attends classes for his own improvement in Tae Kwon Do. |
